We have a LOT to do today ahead of travelling to deepest darkest Wales tomorrow for The Big Retreat. 🎪 So in prep we took ourselves for a walk early this morning to one of our prettiest local parks and started reading a brand new book in the sunshine. 😎 Sounds counterintuitive to get busy doing things that are nothing to do with our actual To Do list we know BUT making time for ourselves and getting out of our heads for a bit is actually the best thing we can do sometimes to stay feeling calm and on top of life. Self acceptance is an important component of healthy self esteem. This is a realistic acceptance of yourself, just the way your are, flaws included. It is an honest acknowledgment of your strengths and failings, while working on personal growth in an optimistic way. If you struggle to self accept, consider for a moment the words you would say to a friend who was identical to you. Would you be harsh and judgmental, or would be be kind, generous, respectful and empathetic? Perhaps accepting the person's "deficits", uniqueness or idiosyncrasies as part of them, without judgment or criticism? 🌊 REMEMBER - You don't have to be perfect to be a worthy person. DEEP BREATHING CALMS YOUR EMOTIONS A recent study showed that controlling breathing by counting breaths influences “neuronal oscillations throughout the brain,” particularly in brain regions related to emotion. Participants were asked to count how many breaths they took over a two-minute period, which caused them to pay especially focused attention to their breathing.  When they counted correctly, brain activity (monitored by EEG) in regions related to emotion, memory and awareness showed a more organised pattern versus what’s normally experienced during a resting state. The results are preliminary, but add to the argument that controlling breathing taps into something deeper. Deep breathing technique: Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven.
