I went on a tour of @adernats winery cooperative yesterday on a whim, I was in the area and looking for something to do. Our tour guide was an Italian woman who fell in love with a Catalan chef and stayed. When the tour was over, I asked her about places to eat. She gave me 3 addresses with @portal22 being the one where Joan Castells is the chef . Naturally I had to try it First of all the town of Valls, worth a visit for the inwardly leaning ochre buildings alone Portal 22 is one floor of a many roomed flat. This is the sardine “salad”, sardines treated like herring with a chutney and the salad wrapped in rice paper. One of my favourite dishes alongside the strawberry panna cotta.

When we travel, @travelswithdeb and I hardly stop by to eat -- there is always one more museum to see, one more street to walk, one more shop to peep in. . . We also make it a point to cook. Using local produce from local shops to make local food is a way to connect to a place and allows you to understand it closely. . . In Spain though you cannot not have time to eat. And so, this time, we made sure to make time to eat. Tapas and Sangria, chocolate and churro, jamon and coffee, pig's ears and mushroom. . . And now, as we get ready to leave Madrid, we are finally off to make our breakfast. . .

Our seasonal sashimi at the select counter is Amberjack (kanpachi) from Kagoshima, and Japanese sardine (iwashi) from Toyama. Amberjack’s juicy and fatty flesh are meltingly perfect this season. Japanese Sardine is also particularly fatty and packed with nutrients and flavor.

When we travelled through Portugal, no matter where we went, I would order sardines. And that was pretty much the same story here in Greece. I just adore sardines. Most of the time we got an amazing array of vegetables, beans etc. But when sardines were available, that’s what I had to order. If you are trying to read the Greek, it ays “thank you very much“ 😅

Same pasta shapes as yesterday. The life of the rich and famous, so glamorous! Who needs caviar and foie gras when you can have cheap pasta back to back? I actually have no boiler at the moment so we set up camp in my bedroom (the biggest one) with a small heater and avoid venturing into the wild (aka the rest of the freezing cold flat). Cooking is limited to very quick and low maintenance meals, like this pasta! This was pasta shapes with broccoli, sardines (with the olive oil they came in) and boiled eggs. So fancy! I boiled the eggs and the broccoli in the same pot as the pasta, because doing dishes with cold water is not fun.
