“There is in every woman's heart a spark of heavenly fire which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity, but which kindles up and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity.” - Washington Irving ➕ Untitled, 2010, 18 x 8 ¼ inches, acrylic on wood, artist

In the 10 years leading up to Haiti Mama, I was an Employment Counselor in Minnesota specializing in services for adults with disabilities + severe and persistent mental illness. I was given a caseload of folks who needed a job, I got to know them + earned their trust and then we figured out what they could do that would improve their symptoms so they could succeed. . I’d guess, Haiti is one of the worst places to carry the additional burden of metal health because the general population believes symptoms are caused by mystical voudou things, and very few doctors know much more than Freudian nonsense. . When I started Haiti Mama, I let God pick my very first caseload. I had no idea how bold I was being in my obedience. But, I committed to employing 65% of those parents no matter how long it would take me. . It took us 5 years to figure out where Mama JMac could succeed because of the additional barriers Haiti will never accurately diagnose. We love her so much we paid her to do what she believed she could for over a year + used that time to assess her strengths. . After a year, we realized that she would excel most in a position that is strictly reserved for men in her culture. . | | Gatekeeper | | I have yet to believe we need a guy with a gun letting people in and out of our gate during the day, but I have been paying a regular guy to do it and it wasn’t working perfectly. . During our assessment year Mama JMac showed us she was fearless, loyal, stubborn + always on time. We also realized she’s been with us so long she knows the face, name, neighborhood and position of every person who works with Haiti Mama. . Try getting past that lady, I dare ya... ♥️ - Tausha, HM Founder
